Pete's Styles of Yoga

Pete’s teaching style is best described as a Forrest Yoga Inspired Vinyasa Flow. If you’re new to yoga and not quite sure what that means, the best way to explain his classes is they are designed to help you journey toward connecting your mind, body and spirit through breath work and awareness. Powerful sequences are designed to create a fluid practice of meditative movement, while also cultivating an awareness of alignment. Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cry, but no matter what, we always work on building strength and flexibility. And we always sweat! Pete believes that vigorous asanas (poses) are a pathway to helping us overcome our self-imposed limitations; through a challenging yoga practice, we can see our potential to overcome any difficulty.

Life is always in a dynamic state of change; the challenge is to overcome our obstacles and learn that, with patience (and a sense of humor), we can move through anything. Rather than reacting to our environment, we can choose to connect with the breath and move from a mode of reacting to a mode of patient understanding - not only with our minds, but with our bodies and our hearts.

 Candlelight Flow
Light up your spirit by stepping away from fluorescent lights and fog and into a warm candlelit studio. The first 20-30 minutes of class are spent gently waking up the body before moving into a vigorous, deep flow asana, integrating breath work and awareness. With only candles, soft light, and no mirrors, you will be naturally encouraged to take your yogic journey inward, connecting the mind, body and spirit, using Buddhist mindfulness meditation to guide you into creating a more meditative yogic practice.

Happy Hour Yoga
What better way to unwind from your week and avoid a Saturday Night Fever than with detoxifying twists and playful arm balances? This will be a fun-filled hour and a half of Vinyasa flow that will energize your mind, body and spirit to uplifting music from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. No commercial breaks, but you are allowed to take a child’s pose or two if you need it (or, instead, a Kid ‘n Play). Skip the mind altering substances and get high on your own breath, sweat and tears!

Forrest Yoga
With an emphasis on deep, conscious breathing, this challenging style of Hatha yoga helps you to build strength, core power and inner awareness. Designed to heal the ails of modern living (frazzled mind, tense neck and shoulders, weak abs, low back and hips), this class uses heat and vigorous sequences of postures to sweat out toxins and improve digestive. The long holds in the pose progressions help you flush, oxygenate and rejuvenate every cell in your body, leaving you feeling refreshed, renewed and inspired.

Vinyasa
This class focuses on breath-synchronized movement to help you flow dynamically through postures as you quiet the mind and energize your spirit. Flow through sun salutations with mindfulness as you work your way toward deeper hip and heart openers, twists and inversions with playfulness, compassion, and upbeat music. This is an ideal class for those who like to sweat and move more quickly than a traditional hatha class, but not as quickly as a power class, allowing more time to feel the alignment of poses in the body. Open to all levels.

Pete's Story

After thirty years of running, cycling, and competitive sports, Pete was astonished to learn that his biggest challenge and adventure would happen on a yoga mat. Within six months of practicing yoga consistently, not only did Pete feel stronger and more flexible, but he also began to realize the deeper benefits of meditative movement.
Motivated by a desire to further explore this connection of mind, body, and spirit through movement and breath, Pete spent several years and over 600 hours training with world renowned yoga instructor Ana Forrest. It is through this experience that he learned how to compassionately guide students of all levels through a vigorous yoga practice with integrated breath work and awareness.
Known for his joyful energy, compassionate guidance, and sense of humor, Pete creates a spiritual yet light-hearted environment for his students to uncover the deeper benefits of yoga.
We sat down with Pete and asked him a few questions:


How did yoga find its way into your life?
I had a very active childhood.  I grew up with three brothers, including my fraternal twin, all within three years of age of each other. We played together in the woods, fished, and rode bikes. When I wasn't outside adventuring, I found myself exploring all kinds of sports - football, soccer, baseball, wrestling, cross-country running, and swimming.
In my 20's, I was  running, mountain biking, road bike riding, and snowboarding. I completed several half marathons, one full marathon, and road countless over 100 mile bike rides. As I moved into my early 30's, all that life of action began to take a toll on my body. I had been hearing about how great yoga was for building strength and flexibility and decided to check it out to help relieve my body of it's tightness and try to remedy some "tweaky" joints and muscles. Within six months to a year of a consistent yoga practice I started to realize the "deeper" benefits of what a moving meditative practice can bring, and I was hooked.

What inspired you to become a teacher?
I am reminded of a quote (this is something you will hear me say quite a bit if you hang out with me for longer than 5 minutes) by Maya Angelou,
"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." - Maya Angelou
This quote has always been an inspiration to me. When I graduated from the Forrest Yoga Teacher Training, I was unsure if I wanted to teach.  However, when I embarked on my journey to share my passion for yoga with students, I began to realize that I have an amazing opportunity to help people feel better about themselves, move through the negative emotional energy stored in their bodies, and help them connect into their authentic selves. This is my main inspiration for teaching.
 
What moves you to continue learning and growing as a teacher?
Helping my students move deeper into their yoga practice motivates me to continue learning and growing as a teacher. I recently traveled to Boston to assist my teacher, Ana Forrest, with her Forrest Yoga Teacher Training.  I learned a lot about creating a safe space for the yoga students as well as what adjustments work well with the poses. Since then I have become more interested in helping my students move energy, especially by clearing negative energy from their bodies.  I am also in the process of doing an Acupressure Massage training which I hope will provide me with more tools to help the students.
 

How would you describe your classes?
The class I teach is a Forrest Yoga Inspired Vinyasa Class. The sequenced poses are a journey towards connecting the body, mind, and spirit by practicing a vigorous asana while integrating breath work and awareness. Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cry, and we will always sweat on the mat.
